there is more energy in lower octane fuel. The ECU will dial back boost when it detects detonation (knock, pinging) via the anti-knock sensor when lower octane fuel is being used in a turbo vehicle. It will not harm the engine since the ECU will ensure safeguards are taken to avoid that.
You will notice better mpg's when using lower octane fuel vs. the better performance when using higher octane. It's just a trade-off according to your priorities...
