Safety isn't just about occupants. It's widely known that people in larger vehicles fair better in collisions than do people in smaller vehicles (largely because of all the larger vehicles hitting smaller ones). The New Yorker ran an article a year or so ago in which they compared the actual death rate of vehicles, the number of occupants who died plus the number of people the vehicles killed. By this count, SUV occupants were safe, but SUVs accounted for more deaths than did cars. The Ford F150 pickup, by the way, was the deadliest vehicle on the road, killing way more people than were killed in it. SUVs in general are about 3 times more likely to be involved in a rollover or one-vehicle crash than are cars.
