Touched a nerve there, did I? ;)
No Honda or Acura has been tested by to be as safe as a 9-5 (and yes Acura = Honda. There is no such thing as Acura in Europe. For example it's called the Honda NSX etc).
In EURONCAP testing the Honda CR-V got a 69% frontal crash rating vs. 81% for the 9-5. Side crash rating was 83% vs. 100%. IIHS ratings are pretty useless. The 9-5 would get a perfect frontal crash rating there, if they didn't use the rediculous procedure of testing leg damage with the right foot on the accelerator instead of on the break away brake pedal. They also dinged it for lacking rear side airbags even though the test showed the rear passengers did NOT have a higher head impact force! It's a joke.
It's quite funny that you're so eager to exclude some of the best data on vehicle safety. You don't think there are Hondas in Sweden??
"As for AWD vs. winter tires. You're making a false argument. Who's to say mattysdad won't put snows on his MDX?"
Try reading my post again. You'll see that I said AWD isn't a substitute for winter tires. Meaning that AWD is not a substitute for a FWD with winter tires. Many people think you don't need winter tires if you get a 4WD/AWD vehicle. Not true, you'll still need to put winter tires on. Also as others have pointed out, AWD does not make the car brake better, quite the contrary because of increased weight. We agree braking ability is probably the single most important safety feature, right?
As for other part of active safety, IE handling, the MDX is of course no match for a 9-5.
Bottomline, the MDX is *not* safer than a 9-5. So the decision to exchange a 9-5 with an MDX cannot be argued to be a safety choice. You might have other reasons to get an SUV, but for the majority it's all about image, even though they might try to rationalise it as something else.
