Many other modern vehicles are MUCH worse, the trend in general seems to be 'design for dealer maintenance' rather than 'owner'. I heard MB eliminated the dipstick (!) on some cars. Ford puts a proprietary pressure plug in some slushboxen for fluid changes. You'd have to be crazy to go after anything on a Boxster. VW and BMW make you take off multiple pretty shrouds and covers to even discover that what you're looking for is buried anyway.

When I'm spinning the oil filter off the front of a 1.6L Toyota block, spilling oil everywhere while wiggling it past the manifold, sorry, one can't tell me that's 'designed for maintenance'. That's stupid. Packaging for space seems to have trumped user-friendliness awhile back. Unfortunately, I don't think any make is immune to the trend. I haven't looked under the hood of a 9-3SS but I don't expect it to be any easier than a 9-3.

I agree with Dean, though, the oil pressure switch is really in a dumb spot. Especially as bigger engines are shoehorned into smaller engine bays, owner maintenace will really become a headache, and we'll see more things that take massive disassembly to get to (i.e. motor mount to get to belt, etc.)

Heck, even my 65 GTO had that #8 spark plug that was nearly impossible to get out even though there was enough space in the bay for another 8 cylinders.

I won't get into reliability; my experience is based on buying used and doing my own work, so I've seen plenty of my past Asian cars on tow trucks with critical failures in the second 100K.
