Wayne
I have owned seven 4-cylinder high output turbo Saabs, have put over 120K miles on each of 5 of those, 2 of them my wife and I owned for 10 years, and I have never had a maintenance expense over $700. Never a turbo, never a transmission, never an ACC, never a DIC. The only tow was when the alternator gave out after 9 years and 110K miles. The cars have been extremely reliable, and I have spent very, very little on maintenance.
My most recent Saab is an '03 9-5 Aero Wagon, and so far it's only failure has been the outside temperature sensor - big deal - which took the dealer 5 minutes to replace, without an appointment, under warrantee. My '01 Aero wagon had one warrantee claim in 40K miles, when the air conditioner compressor failed during the car's first month of hot weather. A pinched o-ring somewhere. Warrantee.
As for positives - safety is number one. Almost everyone in my extended family drives a Saab because of the excellent - albeit sometimes traumatic - safety experiences we have cumulatively experienced (deer, high-speed roll-overs, broadside at 45MPH, etc.) with zero medical consequences. 5 of my 6 young grandchildren ride around in the back seats of Saabs.
A very close 2nd is that driving the Saab is a gas. Whoooosh! What a delight. The commute is always a pleasure.
High comfort up front and exemplary comfort for anyone in the rear seat.
That's been my experience.
