The "transitor" is called a triac, it is a gated power switching device which is essentially 2 transistors enabling it to pass AC current. Remember the red DI's used a switch capable of passing only direct current, and I think that I read red DI's fail less.
So I was puzzled why my 2004 ARC idles much more harshly than my 1999 9-5, it might be that the spark duration has been dialed back to work the triac less and hence keep it's operating temp lower.
So maybe the change to DI version is not all smoke and mirrors, but a Saab engineer actually made some meaningful changes which will leave less of us stranded. Imagine that, how thoughtfull.
