DI cassette

A 2005 9-5 sportwagon is one of two candidates for my next car. I have been reading the 9-5 BB since March. My concern is the DI cassette. I looked at one yesterday. It didn't match my assumption about a "cassette." (I was a manager for development of military electronics for 18 years.)
My understanding is that when it dies on the road, you have to contend with a road failure, i.e., being towed. How common are such failures? Rare? Or is it something that every 9-5 owner should anticipate will happen within an 8-year, 100,000 mile ownership? Or something in between? I assume that it doesn't fail gracefully, i.e., you have some advance "notice" that a failure is imminent. Who has insight into this?
Where I'm coming from: Our 1988 Camry went for 8 years and 142K miles without a single road failure. Our 1996 Camry has gone 131K miles without a road failure (our daughter has it now.) My current 1997 Volvo 850 (the car being replaced) has 108K miles and has never had a road failure.
