ignition system. this what makes the Saab DI in the 9-5 different and increases the failure rate significantly above other makers using coil on plug ignition. And the Japanese as you might expect do make very reliable coil on plug components.
So yes, the 9-3ss uses an ignition system which is much like most other makers, as Saab has dropped the capacitive discharge aspect of the system.
When the current I4 is eventually replaced, you will not see another CD ignition system, and as it is the only such system used on production autos, it may well be the last time it ever will be utilized. People have come to expect reliable ignition systems, and well they should.
