Interesting posts here...
Yep, the Max does appear to have been hit with an ugly stick, but there are a whole lot of people out there who probably think it looks marvelous. There's no accounting for taste....
The Max, like other Japanese cars, tends to be gadget heavy. So are more and more American cars these days. There are a whole lot of people who like that and will buy a car based on that stuff--whether they use it or not. They like to say their car is loaded cuz it strokes their ego.
Bigger picture... IMHO, I think there is are basic differences between people who tend to buy Japanese, verus US versus European cares AND who are loyal to a given brand. The loyalty is a big thing. Us Saab guys (and BMW, Audi, MB and VW types) have certain things that are important to us (engineering, safety, seats, steering, etc) and we get that in what we prefer to drive. So we also put up with some of the stuff that dies on our cars that is never an issue on Japanese cars.
People who buy domestics and and Japanese cars have a different set of preferences. And for the most part, even the "car-guys" among them value different stuff than us Euro-car types. I think they tend to view cars more as an appliance.
I don't like boring cars, so I don't buy domestic or Japanese. I also insist on great seats and steering. But some of those guys (as a formerly Honda-owning friend who now has a'04 Maxima) think Saabs are weird, ugly, don't handle, etc. So you pay your money and take your choice.
