As someone who recently traded my 2001 9-5 SE wagon for a 2003 certified BMW 525i wagon, I'd like to respond to your posting. After 4 months, I wish I could go back in time and get my Saab back. Yes, it had those nettlesome Saab problems and was at times frustrating, but if I had it to do over again, I'd go for a Saab. The BMW has a very responsive engine and it handles better than the Saab (holding the road), but the 2.5 V6 is down on power (not an issue with the 4.4 V8) and the interior is somewhat cramped next to the Saab. NVH advantage does go to the BMW, which is very still at idle and quiet on the highway. With my Saab, I was always trying to identify the reason for front end vibrations over 75 mph (with varying degrees of success). Gas mileage is about the same. I give the Saab the advantage on looks. It seems to me that a number of the controls in the Bimmer just aren't intuitive (maybe I spent too many years driving Saabs!). Residual values did weigh heavily on my mind, and I think the BMW has the advantage there. Oh, and I miss my rear fog light on the Saab. In my opinion, Saab should have put the 2.8 liter V6 into all 9-5s this year. I would think people paying 9-5 prices want the added refinement and smoother power, even at the expense of some gas mileage (this from someone who got visibly upset when Saab introduced a V6 in 1994).
