I drive a 1998 NG900 and a 2003 BMW 325i. I really like both cars for different reasons.
SAAB is more practical, with a really huge hatch and more flexible rear seat. The seats are ungodly comfortable and it feels great on long trips. Very relaxed long distance touring car. Gas mileage is slightly better than the 2.5l six in the BMW. It is also very baby-friendly, with all the right things in the right places.
However, I really don't consider it a luxury car. It is a really good family car. It is what a family car should be.
BMW, on the other hand, IS a luxury car. It is far more refined. So smooth in everything it does -- the engine, the gearshift, the brakes, the suspension, the steering. Interior textures, the feel of all its controls are really nice. It is very capable in any driving situation. It is much quieter and has a really soothing effect on me. When I drive it I tend to drive slower. It relaxes me and makes me want to spend MORE time driving, so I slow down a lot. The absence of noises in the cabin makes the sound system so much better. I usually listen to books on tape, but when I do listen to music, the Harman Kardon system is fantastic. The trunk is much smaller than SAAB's but it is very well configured and is big enough for a baby stroller and all our stuff for local travel. The seats are nice but not nearly as comfortable as SAAB seats. I have the Sports package with the 10-way adjustable seats. And no top speed limiter ;)
We always take the SAAB when we go on a long trip. It's just a much better long distance car. And we travel a lot.
Another thing I notice about the BMW is how expensively it is built. I work on my cars myself and I can tell you there is a tremendous difference between my 325i and any other car I have ever worked on. Everywhere you look you can tell where the money went. It is very noticeable.
