CrNiFe, you are one of the few people that can confirm that normal extended usage under load has led to problems. Have you had your car alignment tested? You might be surprised how out of spec the car is. Feathering and cupping usually indicates the camber is far too negative.
I can understand if Saab screwed up something on all or a bunch of cars. No manufacturer is perfect, but Saab should own up to it and so far they have run in the other direction and denied any problem at all.
Any similar problems with your 05?
I had a long chat with a NHTSA engineer. He explained that about 3/4 of the recalls are voluntary, but that about 3/4 of the vehicles recalled were because the manufacturers were forced to recall.
The 9-5 is a great long hall car, but if it can't haul with more than minimal load what is the point?
It is hard to say if the distribution of the problem is due to usage differences or manufacturing tolerance differences or some combination of the two.
