No one ever said all 9-5's sludge, but with the car manuals recommended 10,000 miles oil change on earlier models and I believe they said either Dino-oil or semi-synthetic oil was fine, that alone with poor design of oil cooling made for some very "sludgable" conditions. And if only 5-10% of 9-5 Aero and Viggen owners had to pay out of pocket for new engines, well I don't know the sales figures, but whatever 5-10% represents, that's still alot of poor folks that fell for the less than adequate oil cooling and delivery design GM made with the 9-5's and Viggens they put out. In fact they (GM) knew there was a problem, it took them over 5 years to get the band-aid fix of a simple PCV#6 done and installed correctly so cars were then just less prone to sludge. They experimented with many PCV fixes over the years, like PVC#4, which didn't work, ya know. A proper design in the first place doesn't require patches and band-aids to stop engine destruction, even if it was "only" 5-10% of 9-5 Aero/Viggen owners. Maybe even the 9-5 Arc/Linear owners sludged up also??? I have sympathy for them. And I wish you continued luck in your 9-5, keep up the oil changes and I'm sure you'll be fine.
