actually remove existing sludge? From what I read, synthetic oil (PAO) actually has very little detergent effect. Mobil "full synthetic" actually has to include up to 20% carrier oil (i.e. dyno oil) in order to carry all the additives that are necessary for the detergent effect to pass all the latest API tests. Most other "synthetic" oils by the major purveyors of oil are just refined dyno oil (e.g. Shell Rotella, and Castro + Quaker State that used to buy synthetic stock from Mobil but now from Shell because Shell's "synthetic" oil stock is cheaper); the latest API docs removed definition of "synthetic oil" altogether because too much money is at stake for too many big oil companies.
