The attached link to a Technical Service Bulletin on the Townsend website shows where Saab specs 0W-40 full-syn as the "top of the list" choice for their cars. Under the heading "Cars Affected," they list, "All 900, 9000, 9-3 and 9-5," which means all the vehicles Saab's made since the 900 went into production (late '70's?). Next down on the list is 5W-30 semi-syn. Keep in mind that these are Saab's own supplied-to-dealer oils OUTSIDE THE U.S., where Corporate Average Fuel Economy (C.A.F.E.) requirements don't have to be met.

You'll also note in Jason's scan that the ILSAC GF-3 oils are "approved for use" but not necessarily what's recommended. The new Mobil 1 0/5/10W-30s have all been upgraded to ACEA A5/B5 specs (for extended drains), but the GF-3 spec they carry means they have fewer anti-wear additives due to some manufacturers' concerns over catalytic converter longevity. Other oils rated to ACEA A3/B3 specs are probably fine to use, whatever the brand. (Delvac 1 5W-40 has a higher percentage of anti-wear compounds than M1 0W-40, & the TSB does not include any Heavy Duty or Diesel-specific oils on the list (i.e., possibly for catalyst concerns)).

For me, I'll use what Saab recommends for their closest neighbors, which is 0W-40 full-syn.
