because of the lovely CHMSL installed in our 9-5s.
But anyway, back to the point--
Realistically, any synthetic would probably do the job just fine. The reason I always stress ACEA A3 is because it's a European rating, and SAAB is a European car.
Not only that, but I find that even cheap non-synthetic oil meets API SL/ILSAC GF-3 spec, so I choose to follow the more stringent ACEA standard. Off-brand motor oil at Target meets API SL/ILSAC GF-3. So API SL/ILSAC GF-3 tells me almost nothing.
The reason I keep stressing the MB 229.1/229.3/229.5 standards is because their standards seem to be even more stringent than those of ACEA. Not many synthetics meet MB 229.3, and even fewer meet 229.5.
Also, a point about Mobil 1. Recently, they reformulated their oil from "Tri-Synthetic" to "SuperSyn". There was a lot of noise in various forums and bulletin boards about this, claiming that in most viscosities, the "SuperSyn" formulation is inferior to the older "Tri-Synthetic" formulation. But supposedly there's one exception: Mobil 1 0W-40 w/SuperSyn.
I am not a chemical engineer, and the only "proof" I can come up with is by studying the ACEA specifications and the MB spec sheets. Mobil 1 0W-40 meets the ACEA's strictest specs, and it's listed under MB's second-strictest specification sheet. (Nothing sold in the U.S. meets MB's highest spec sheet, 229.5)
As for the new 9-3, Mr. Goldberger (from NINES) also said that it's filled with Mobil 1 0W-40; see the post below.
