Hi,
All evidence seems to point to heat being culprit in DI failure.
Was this during the Santa Ana winds? I was caught in some of it
this week when coming back from Las Vegas. For people outside of
California, November can be the hottest time of the year because of Winds
that blow out from the desert called Santa Ana winds.
Direct Ignition Cassette, as you know, sits on top of hot engine.
Most of the time, it works fine, but given aggravating factors, it can
fail. A comment was made by dwin that "wide plug gap is straw that broke
the camel's back".
In addition on a V6 there are two DI cassettes per each bank of cylinders
with each sitting on top of 1.5L. V6 very rarely has DI failures.
However, with I4 and one DI cassette sitting on top of 2.3L, DI failure
is well known to this BB.
So, listen to Jason. Please replace spark plugs and examine gaps.
Some have reported gaps as large as 1.5 mm, which is 50% out of spec.
When Trionic senses mis-fire, it will have to try to increase voltage
in primary coils, which increases heat which reduces conductivity of
primary coils resulting in need to further raise voltage.
Dean ... are you out there? You know a lot of DI. How does DI
compensate for mis-fire? Does it try to fire twice or does it simply
try to raise voltage the next time? Either way voltage is raised
because firing twice per combustion requires greater voltage to build
up same amount of magnetic energy in a shorter amount of time.
thanks
Jae
