when the DI fails, combustion becomes inefficient and/or incomplete, and it's at that point that the unburned gases make their way to the cat, and cause it to overheat and possibly fail. I guess the amount of unburned gas that makes it to the cat converter depends on your engine RPM when the DI fails.
But you're right, once the DI is dead, you can't restart the car--if the cat hasn't been harmed up to this point, it'll probably be fine.
