One of the ways that a catalytic conveter reduces emissions is by operating at high heat, even glowing red in the internals of the chamber. When you are driving at highway speed and the ignition fails, fuel continues to be injected into the engine, and the now unburnt fuel passes to the hot cat. This is bad for the cat, however when one realizes that your engine has failed, one usually get off the throttle, shutting down the intake of air with cylinders pumping away. This creates "back pressure"
which can terminate the cat, and in rare cases the engine itself.
In the brief period these conditions exist, your cat can be gone.
