I don't see how you can continue to say that the 0W-40 is for extreme conditions. It meets your beloved GM spec, just like Mobil Lite. It has the same 0W- rating, just like Mobil Lite. The only difference? Mobil Lite is "less filling" when it comes to critical component wear protection. Give me a full-bodied A3-rated 0W-40 any day over an A5-rated 0W-30 which can't stand up to itself in the mirror!
(is there steam comin' outta yer ears yet?)
Seriously though, how can you still believe the 0W-40's only for extreme conditions? They both meet the new GM spec, so one's not any better in that regard. They both meet API SL/ILSAC GF-3 fuel economy improvement specs, so there's no argument to be had there. It can't really be simply because it's a 40 wt, is it? Or because "the manual says so"?
The trade-off between them is slightly better gas mileage with the 0W-30, instead of increased high temp & load protection with the 0W-40. Is that really what you want for your car? I can't really believe that you do. What are you not telling me?
I know the new GM spec deals with extended drains, but does it also address other factors like the API, ILSAC & ACEA specs? And how do us mere mortals get a copy of this Saab oil bulletin?
