The 'for extreme conditions' in the manual is really a way of saying that it will do a good or better job than the other oils, and if you care enough to want to use it, it will work well, but Saab is not going to state that you really need to use that oil. So they are sitting on the fence.
So no problem, choose your own oil. For the loads of a 250HP 4 cylinder engine, I don't think that a 340 will cut it. And this is not black magic or rocket science. Go from a xW30 to a xW40 and see if it feels better. Does it run quieter and smoother? The 0W40 will probably provide improved MPG's, so thats less friction, and if someone does not think that less friction is less wear, then they are not going to be convinced of anything and one should not waste their breath.
I found that Delvac One 5W40 delivered 6% better mpgs on my highway commutes than Mobil 1 10W30 (95 SET). I expect that you would see the same with the 0W40, or better. The thinking that a W40 means lower mpgs that a W30 is simply not true. Try the oils and trust your senses. You can judge these things for your self and you don't need to be a slave to the numbers game. If you don't like an oil that you tried, its is a fairly inexpensive thing, but an invaluable insight. The differences are tangable but minor, none will in the short term cause any problems. And as an engine ages, the requirements will change. If a W40 does not seem to change the noise and smoothness of an engine when its young, it might have a pronouced effect in a mature engine. The recommendations in owners manuals change from year to year, but to think that the requirements for a new engines are optimal for a mature engines is silly. Try and judge for your self.
