The diesel engines have huge low rpm torque. This makes these vehicles some the the fastest vehicles around town. AWD will allow for delivery of that torque to the road. Diesel power plants are often heavier, but a nice 4 cylinder diesel is probably not heavier than the V6 engines. The transmissions may be bigger too to handle the torque. The 9-5 2002 suspenstion redesign was reported to be motivated by the 2.2L diesel. There was some suspension lightening going on to compensate for the diesel. The battery with the diesels might be heavier too. The fuel injector pump for these engines is heavy too, producing around 20,000 PSI.
I think that it is short sighted to claim that these power plants are not needed. A 50% increase in MPG's is huge. It will take hybred systems a long time to catch up to that with a 3700-3800 pound vehicle.
CVT's are nice, but little is gained compared to the new 6 speed manual gear boxen. The CVT's will have greater benefit in dispacement of conventional automatic transmission technology. But as it is, with the 9-5's the penalty of the slush boxen is reportedly only about 1 mpg on the highway.
My reservations about AWD is the weight penalty. Lots of added cost too.
