My last car was an '00 Jetta TDI. Great mileage, but if you think a 4cyl is a hard sell in the US try a 4 with 90hp! Granted, the torque (155ft-lbs) is higher than the base 2L, but still only a fraction of what my Aero's puttin' out. Now, if Saab was to make a "High output" diesel that might be interesting, but those who think the 4 runs rough will definitely not like the diesel no matter how refined they've gotten over the past few years. I also found that because I live in a downtown metropolitan area, the only people buying diesel were other VW owners. Combined with the fact that not many other stations in the area were selling diesel that resulted in the price for diesel often being higher than that for regular gasoline!
And why bother to talk about hybrids when the cars of the future will be powered by hydrogen? Imagine how much torque you could get out of a nice big DC motor!
