The 1.9TDi engine can be had with 130HP over there.

For the last 9 years I've been renting a Peugeot 406 SW Diesel during my summer trips to Europe. The last 3 years I had it with the 2.0 Hdi common rail technology motor. This engine has "only" 110 HP but has the torque of a 3.0 liter gasoline one at much lower RPMs and revs up like it too. Last summer the Peugeot broke on me after a week and since the dealer couldn't supply the same car I ended up for the last 3 weeks with a brand new Skoda Superb (streched Passat) having the 1.9TDi engine (130HP). Holy smoke, what a rocket this car was! Got close to 145 mph effortlessly once while in Germany. Averaged 33.5 MPG with both cars fully loaded (4 people and their luggage) and a lead right foot. Many long trips were in Germany at speeds above 100 mph. I'd choose a modern diesel engine over a gasoline one any time if available in the US for the following reasons: drivability, MPG economy and safety. Once the US drivers will get exposure to these modern diesels I have no doubt they'll change their minds about diesel propulsion.
