No arguments there, I believe the German version uses a variable boost turbocharger to get the extra 25 horses...
I looked at a couple of british tuner sites when I had the Jetta who said they were getting something ridiculous like 350hp and over 400 ft-lbs on the same 1.9L engine! ECU upgrades were all that seemed to be available in Canada though. A few years back I did some design work on a timing drive tensioner for the VW factory race team TDI golf- so tuners aren't the only ones getting power out of these things- I believe that one had even higher torque values!
The diesels aren't too bad around town, you don't have to convince me though- I bought one! One thing that is neat about the diesel was that you can let out the clutch without even touching the gas (even on steep uphills!) and coast along nicely. In hindsight, perhaps I should have taught my girlfriend to drive standard on the Jetta. Of course, fast is relevant... comparing the 90Hp Jetta TDI to a 90hp Saturn, the Jetta is definitely fast, No competition for an Aero or other comparable car, or even VW's own 1.8T for that matter though.
