Admittedly, I drive a stick shift Aero, but I take issue with your argument--computers do exactly what they're told, and can only follow a program. The rev behavior of Trionic stick-shift SAABs is as such because someone at SAAB programmed it that way.

It is actually ideal to have the revs fall slowly when you're shifting at low RPM, because in this situation, you're accelerating slowly and presumably taking your time. You can take your time with the shifts and savor each throw. The synchronizers allow the stick to fall right into gear as the revs match up, I love it..

Now, if you accelerate hard and shift at, say, 5,000 rpm, you can shift very quickly into the next gear and let the clutch out immediately--the computer will allow the revs to fall MUCH more quickly to match this aggressive driving style.

Having ESP, TCS, ABS, fuel injection, etc., is NOT predicated on having an automatic transmission, or else these things would not be available on stick shift cars. For example, ESP and ABS do not have the ability to summon a downshift from the automatic transmission. In many circumstances, this would actually be undesirable.

All in all, having three pedals is just more fun to me. Nothing quite as satisfying as pulling off a perfectly smooth, double (de)clutched downshift.

Thank you, SAAB, for making all your cars available with a proper stick shift!

Jason
