Jason: I think you missed the main point I was trying to make, namely that the optimum operation of many of the systems on modern cars like the 9-5 is based on the use of an automatic. Think about this. In a stick shift car, you apply the brakes to the point of impending lockup( ABS starts to kick in). Ina manual shift car, unless you anticipated that event, you are now starting and stopping your engine about 15 times per second, actually more since you would multiply that by the final drive ratio to convert axle speed to engine speed with a 1:1 top gear. Can't be very kind to the engine, can it?
Second, the reason that today's modern engines loose RPM slowly, unlike older designs( or competition engines) is very simple. Emmisions. Just no way around it. Throw in turbocharging into the mix, and the need to keep boost pressure up, and that just becomes the nature of the beast. Modern engines are just not going to decelerate like those of days gone by.
Another thing about your assertion that the rate of engine RPM loss being slow during leisurely shifts at low RPM. If you depress the clutch, the driven side of the clutch assembly slows down not based o nthe engine RPM, but by the internal parasitic drag in the gearsets,ie friction. The engine ,or drive side of the clutch assembly, is not affecting that until you release it. This is based on my asserton in this discussion that you are not going around double clutching all the time, and my reason for saying that is purely: How many people, even die hard stick drivers, are really doing that? The 9-5 is not exactly blessed with a quick short throw precision shifter, so double clutching it, even on rare occasions, is a pain. This all gets back to my point that in daily driving, not racing or pure performance driving, an automatic just does a better job at diong what most drivers want done, that is, shifting quickly, smoothly, quietly, and at the right time for real world driving conditions. The inherent slip in an automatic makes the seamless operation of the newer electronic driver aids that much easier to integrate into a car's design. None ofwhat I just said will make a stick shifter change his or her mind right now, but I believe that as far as facts go,I would be supported by engineers who know these systems and how they affect cars.
