J: Why would you want to heel and toe downshift, other than to satisfy a personal feeling that you had "fun" doing it? Is it a more efficient or faster way to get from one gear ratio to another? Not really. Even a typical modern automatic can change ratios faster than the average driver can change gears without double clutching. Add double clutching to the equation, and more time is lost shifting.Having driven stick most of my driving life,I can understand if someone says that they just enjoy it, and they "think" that it makes them more involved with driving, etc. The simple facts are though, that when measured with a watch, manual shifting does not come close to what a good automatic can do today. In sport mode,my Aero auto can downshift to a lower gear a heck of a lot faster than I could if using even a good shifter, let alone the Saab's " less than good" setup.
When it comes to the ings like the paddle shifted Electro-Hydraulic transmission, and even continuously variable units( for small displacement vehicles mostly), you are staring the future in it's face and trying not to flinch, but my assertion isthat in sporty perofrmance cars,as wellas others, the manual shift will go the way of the buggy whip and the carburtetor. I just prefer to look forward towards new and better technology rather than back to the past.
