Yes, it has been going on for a long, long time. Like you, I had a 9000 (a '94 CS) and the DI failed, though not completely. The engine just stumbled on acceleration.
So far, my '99 9-5 (100K miles) is on the original DI.
VW and Saturn have recalled their ignition systems (VW-coil, Saturn - DI). But they deal in very high volume, and thus the government gets a LOT of complaints, causing a recall and a massive replacement campaign.
But Saab is a *very* low volume manufacturer (Saab's total yearly sales are a tenth of just the sales of the Chevy Impala alone), and the 9-5 is only a minority percentage of Saab's total volume. So the government gets very few complaints, not enough to force a recall.
I imagine if we all filed a complaint, it would be heard better. I think Saab is hearing better, however... I believe the new 9-3SS does not use a DI cassette.
