It's not a matter of shrugging off known problems. All cars are going to have some problem or problems they have more regularly than others. I'd rather they be things you can keep an eye out for (like oil consumption) or that present themselves as gradual failures (like the Saturn's DIS coil pack & torque axis mount). Alternators go on all cars, maybe the Saturn's go sooner but it's not unique to them. Like I said, mine's on it's second alternator at 184,000. And yes I've replaced the torque axis mount twice, again a simple DIY job, and a problem that doesn't really cause any problems other than the vibrations.
Mine's a stick shift btw, never a single problem. Original clutch. I still maintain it's the best stick I've driven!
Hey I bought an '03 Aero so I'm not trying to trash Saabs. I believe it's probably the most reliable Euro car and on par with most other makes. But, if this DIC problem really does go back to the old 9000, it's inexcusable that it apparently continues to this day. My opinion would also be much different if the failure just brought up a CEL and the engine started running crappy (like say bad plug wires or DIS packs on the Saturn). But the fact that it'll just leave you stranded with no warning is bothersome.
