The 9-5 is pretty good at pushing my luxury button, but definitely in a more classic style, or old fashioned if you will.
It's the 9-3SS that needs improvement in my mind. At the Proving Grounds for the 9-3SS intro we sampled the small BMW, Audi, MBZ, Volvo (and a 9-5 Aero which is why I bought a 9-5 vs the smaller cars, but that's another story that's still relevant here) and all of them were "richer" particularly in the console area.
The materials and construction in the 9-3SS are first rate, the dash and the buttons and stuff, but the console seems cheap with the smart slot being the worst offender. Why isn't the trim bar above the glove box wood or aluminum look for the model? And I personally was distressed about the new wood effect in the Arc.
The 9-5 console looks richer with the wood or aluminum look, still somewhat more plain the the competition, especially behind the console where the key and window switches are, but I was more favorably impressed, so I bought one......
Spent some time in a 2002 A6 4.2V8, nice detailing yes, but too techno busy and red for my taste. Same with the BMW's for me, nice rich detailing, but functionally nothing special, still red too, my verdict is still out on I Drive, but darn those stalks are good.
A new 9-5 is availible with ALL the toys, park assist, rain sensing wipers, tyre pressure moniters, nav, EXP, killer stereo, paddle shift, xenons, heated seats, and rare for the class, vented seats. Nothing second rate there.
