Saab is 2000 9-5 2.3t auto with 41,000 miles, purchased used in 11/03.

Audi is 2004 2.7T allroad Tiptronic with 1,000 miles, leased 8/04. Only a 24 mo. lease, to see what comes along in the next round of vehicles.

From Nov. 03 until Aug. 04 I drove the 9-5, so I am most accustomed with the Saab controls. I have been driving the Audi for only one month.

I have absolutely no bias. In the past have owned two 5 series bmws, Mercedes, Porsche, Volvo.

I got the Saab 9-5 as a fairly low cost driver's car. Like the off-the-line aspect of my car. I also like the controls, and the sound system (HK Premium, I think). All of the controls are easily in reach, very intuitive.

Audi controls are not as easy to use, or intuitive. The Bose Premium system does NOT sound as good, as the HK in the Saab. It has 6 discs in dash, which is a plus (unlike other Germans with six in the back).

I give Saab higher marks for functionality or "ergonomics" and I give Audi higher marks for design or "appearance", materials, fit and finish.

I can see why VW/Audi has been winning industry awards for interiors. My guess they are decided on design, materials, fit and finish; not on functionality or "ergonomics."
