The complaints are absolutely right - it *seems* as if Saab have "cheaped out" in making the turn signal switches the way they have done. The fact that it would cost them very little/nothing to make them more robust does perhaps say something given that they haven't exercised the option, even in the newer models. That something in my opinion relates to safety, and when I stop to think about it, I don't wish Saab to change a thing.
Safety as you know is a very high Saab priority. The less "frangible" those turn signal stalks are, the higher risk to you in the advent of a crash. As it stands, they will present no risk to the driver.
As for them not being high quality - that I don't believe is the case. They are very well engineered, high quality injection moulded items. They aren't for a minute "cheap" and it would take but a few cents worth of additional plastic to make them stronger. But they aren't very strong probably for the aforementioned safety reasons.
That said, I've never heard a single complaint of them failing in normal use. Saab have got it right here In my view. Safety over what are cosmetic and trivial issues any day please Saab.
