In my personal experience, the 8v n/a motors have been the most reliable, followed by the 16v turbos, and then the 8v turbo. The following data applies to the motors of the cars discussed, not the complete car.

Case study:
1980 900 GLi (8v, n/a) driven ~60k miles (85k - 145k, t-boned by teenager in camaro) never had any motor problems or tranny problems (4-speed)

1983 900T (8v turbo) driven ~90k miles (135k- 225k, retired due to rust/electrical problems) cracked cylinder head at 140k- was told this was not unusual in 8v turbo heads. No tranny problems (5-speed)

1986 900T (16v turbo) driven ~40k miles (165k- 205k, retired due to tranny failure. Might be a dirt racer these days, or a very stripped parts car. Never had any motor problems.

1986 900 (8v, n/a) driven ~20k? miles (150k- 165k on intermittant odometer, retired due to tranny failure) never had any motor problems.

1986 900 SPG (16v turbo) driven ~50k miles (159k- 208k and counting) head gasket failure at 200k, oil pressure relief valve failure at 206k.

As for reliability, the best example I know of firsthand was my dad's 1st SAAB- a '72 96 (v4) which gave 190,000 miles of trouble-free service on completely origional motor and tranny. His '78 99L was recalled due to paint/rust issues after 8 years/ 145,000 miles, and was on its 2nd head gasket.

Mom's '91 9000 (2.3l 16v n/a) had an oil pump failure around 100,000 miles, I think.
