For overall performance, the 16V beats the 8V hands down. From an ownership standpoint and in terms of overall reliability, the 8V has an advantage IMHO. The 16V's finicky "Air Mass Meter" and "Automatic Idle Control" are constant troublemakers. I'll take an idle adjustment screw over the AIC anyday! The 8V is easier and cheaper to maintain and reliability is simply amazing. It depends on what you are looking for. If I were in the market, I would be looking for a 16VT. But only because I have a turbo-rush addiction that I can't kick and nothing satisfies like a tweaked 16VT. Spend some time with a 16VT in third gear and you will know what I mean.
Good luck in your search.

1985 SPG 16VT serious power
1984 900T 8VT super-reliable and no slouch either
1978 99T 8VT gritty and primal, possibly the most fun of all
