I have an intercooled 8v with 155BHP, definately feels punchier than the 16v, but maybe slightly less top end. What you have to watch on the old B or H series is cracked heads between 2-3 cylinders, though I've never experienced this personally.
Stock 8v's only have 135hp (145 in europe)
