Yes, it's a tight fit. I took mine out to the *right* - driver's side (maybe Townsend was describing the job based on a non-turbo?).
Also, be sure to get the wire as far up under the fingers as possible. What I did was pre-bend the the wire into a diameter slightly larger than what it'd be once inserted so that it would "push" farther beneath the fingers a little bit as I inserted it. If the wire isn't beneath the fingers at a uniform distance all the way around, a small screwdriver to help it along in places might help.
Once you're sure you've got it in well, it's just a matter of trial/error before it goes free.
'nother tip I once read: clean the gunk beneath where the clutch is so that, if you drop the disk upon re-insertion, you don't contaminate it.
'nother tip: while you have access to the flywheel, take a wire wheel to the timing marks to clean 'em up & make 'em shiny, then carefully paint the 16* mark white so it's more visible in the future. i also used the wire wheel to clean the threads on my flywheel bolts.
'nother tip: if you're re-surfacing the flywheel and/or doing the rear main seal, *mark* the flywheel position with respect to the bolts before you remove it. Otherwise, you'll be pulling a plug in cyl. #1 and looking for TDC.
