been told that I could enter the sustem in competitions. I'm not saying the cheapest deck out there but the stereo people I know don't even use the deck amps because it sucks in comparison to an external amp. All you need is a good clean signal from your deck with the different cut-off options and equalizations which works with your pre-amp and your external amp. Having a $1000.00 deck is a waist of money if your going to have an external amp. If your not using an external amp then you would need a better amp in the deck. Why is my $220.00 cheap Kenwood deck good enough for competition if like you say a cheap deck will not give good sound out? I'n not saying the cheapest deck but all the bells and dodads are not going to beat and external amp for good clean sound at high volume. I agree with you that a low end deck that can't even make good clean sound will sound bad no matter how good the ext amp is.
Best, KB.
