1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
Just so you guys know, both the deck and the amp are really important for high quality sound. Not even talking about speakers here (don't get me started:)
There is a reason why one costs $100 and the other costs $200, and the other costs $1000 etc.
But here is the skinny on why the deck is also so very important -
1-D/A converters. These little puppys take the digital 1's and 0's from the cd and then 'replay' the samples at various resolutions. And believe me all D/A converters are not created equal. remember the old soundblaster recordings you did on your computer? Hey its all digital but there are huge differences in quality once your in the digi domain. There are actually single D/A converters that can cost in the 4 digits!(1 little chip on a circuit board.)
2- PRE-AMP. Yup. this is also big. this is the guy who takes the info from the D/A convs in the case of the cd, or the broadcasted signal in the case of the radio staion, and 'treats' it by various means- all of which vary in quality and so also in cost...i.e. class A electrinics, class B electronics, and K-mart electronics. In home systems it is not uncommon to hear systems that cost $60k - not sure about car stereo high end but I cant afford either. In the home, its all about tubes. warm fat tubes. But i digress. The pre-amps also have varying degrees of output voltage, and believe it or not - the quality of that voltage, which is why you will sometimes see ratings like 'line voltage' and 'pro line voltage' which is somwhere in the vicinity of +4. This refers to balanced and unbalanced line outs/ins...
Any way, the pre-amp in the deck, combined with the D/A convs are what shapes the QUALITY of the sound you will hear. Then you can amplify it with the inferior(but basically fine for most ears which really not that discerning) amp that comes with the deck, or you can get into heavier amplification.
3- THE AMP One little hint here is that if an amp is neon green, and has a silkscreen of a big red dragon, or a bears paw, or some crap like that, its because they want to sell it to an easily led consumer. It might have wattage but not quality wattage(i know this sounds weird but its true) Most really high end stereo gear- home or auto - is usually tastefully understated (like a saab!)and in the case of home stereo equip, perhaps even hand made. 1 at a time.
then there are the speakers...bla bla.
