Ah, I see. So then even with a well greased shaft at the splines, with age and use that spot could become fouled with gunk (drying grease + road grime + clutch plate dust) and the problem would return. That's a tricky place to get to if cleaning and relubrication is in mind. Spraying of WD40 or lithium grease down near the clutch area is not advisable. Dis-assembly, then cleaning and relubrication is perhaps the only method.
