On a traditional RWD car the clutch shaft sticks right out of the transmission and is well supported by the tranny and bearings. Therefore, I think that the pilot bearing does relatively little work. Also the clutch is well protected from the elements in a solid housing. My hunch is that is why RWD are less prone to shaft corrosion.
On older British cars like Jags(which I'm familiar with) and MG's(a guess) the clutch shaft out of the tranny is not as "over engineered" as Detroit iron, and you can get a nasty crunch when the shaft gets rusty and/or the pilot bearing goes.
On our Saabs, we have a small floating shaft and its movement probably wears the pilot bearing faster. Also the clutch cover is not well sealed and we have an open hole under the flywheel, both of which provide a route for moisture/condensation to attack the shaft splines.
