It would seem that cold oil in the tranny would slow things down and stop gear movement when at rest and in neutral. I have experienced various crunches with cold trannies while moving but normally that is a synchro issue or drag hindering double clutching on a non-synchro car.
A Series 1 E-Type Jag (prior to 1st gear synchro) will crunch nicely in 1st or reverse, if the pilot is bad and if the clutch shaft is rusty, just like a Saab. No crunch if properly maintained. I used to sell the things.
