just general comment this not saab specific and from someone who has driven cars with no synchro on first which gets used a lot more than reverse for a good few years..

okay in a perfect world with no engine revs and no component drag the gears should not spin much.. but very often they do.. fact of life.. oil drag is enough to cause the spin the colder and thicker the oil the greater the problem..

a few extra revs and not being super carefull every time will cause the odd crunch.. when the car is cold the problem will be worse.. over many years of driving cars with no synchro on first gear i have simply adopted the habit of useing the synchro on another gear to stop the odd crunch.. u dont have to go right into the other gear just pushing against it stops any cog spin..

clutch drag or wobbly first motion shafts will make it ten times worse no doubt.. but oil drag on ts own is enough to cause some spin which is normal.. so is the odd small crunch.. i dont like any odd crunches to be honest which is why i use the other gears synchro method.. over the years it has become so much of a habit i dont notice even doing it.. but i did learn to do it for a reason.. not just for fun.. he he

mind u as i say no synchro on first was far more of a problem than no synchro on reverse.. first gets a lot more use.. and abuse.. he he

this is not a design fault.. the makers just think that they can get away without synchro on reverse cos it should never be used unless the car is stationary and the engine revs at a slow idle.. mind u they used to say exactly the same about first.. but somewhere down the line they have changed their minds.. noisy first gears due to chipped teeth were quite common back then as well..
