Why those shims behind reverse gear wear out I don't know, but they are trashed on almost every tranny I take apart. Granted they have very little support behind them on that big pinion nut, but they are also stationary with the reverse gear and pinion nut. When the shims wear out, the front nut get loose, since that's the nut that packs all spacers together and squeezes them against those shims. Maybe the reverse gear is wobbling in the back under load, and therfore put stress on the shims?
1st to 2nd have an very easy time to crunch, even on a brand new tranny. It's another one of the famous Saab quirks. Inspect all the teeth on each gear and especially on the syncro sleeves for roundness/wear. 1-2 gear and syncros usually takes more beating than 3,4 and 5.
2nd to 3rd is not as common for crunching but happens sometimes.
Look for broken teeth on both reverse gears.
The spiderwebbing in casing is found on all trannys, it have to do with the casting of the housing.
Look also closely on 1-2 shift fork, it usually wear down.
Intermediate needle bearing, shaft and thrust washer wear out all the time on 88 and older trannys, (what year is yours?)
