the shim absorbs side thrust on the gear stack. poor lube will make them heat up.

as for parts. replace ALL bearings....no questions asked, it is not worth the added cost .vs. labor curve for a redo...BigTime. when trans age they emit metal....that metal ends up between bearing and race everytime. as for shims. 95% chance you can just replace with new and it will fit. the bearings are incredibly precise, the shims account for casting differences, same castings...same shims. in either case it is quite simple to check the settings even without the saab tools. when you get that far post a question.

since it is a n/a car the gears should be in fine shape. if you do not abuse it then shotpeening is not necessary but still a nice touch. swap drivers from side to side. check the layshaft for wear also.

it all depends on how good of job you wish to do...big difference between a 50k trans and a 250k trans..but if car only has 25k left in it then drop it in and drive! :)

loose nut could account for sloppy shifting. be sure to polish all the syncro ring teeth...i used a dremel and brush...should have used a polishing stone but was afraid of removing too much metal. if you can see wear on forks then replace them...i.e. 040 of wear is a bit... 010 is not, some of them will wear around .125.

polish all shafts before reassembly and use superlube grease for assembly, put a load of oil through it then refill with a high quality synthetic lube.


hmm...let's see...what did i miss...dunno..u'll have to figure that one out along the way.
