Waxing poetic, eh? I never got into downhill, cross-country was what I did. Can't do that around Atlanta. darn.
-----------
On the FI and spark systems ...

In a 16-valve, non-turbo C900, you've got 2 systems going.

The LH ECU (passenger side kickpanel) controls the fuel injection with the input from the AMM and O2 sensor (and RPM) like you described.

The EZK ignition controller (behind the drivers side headlight) regulates the advance/retard curve for the ignition based on RPM and what it reads from the knock sensor. In a non-turbo, the EZK box gives a pulse output to the ignition amplifier.

---------------------

Painting it with a broad brush, the difference between the non-turbo and turbo engine control is that the turbo deals with knock by backing off boost through the APC system, while the non-turbo deals with knock by retarding the ignition.

----------

The LH ECU in your '88 is pretty much the same as the one in my '89 SPG - there are some detail differences. But the ECU doesn't know pressure - it just knows how much air is going through the AMM. If you look at a fuel map, it has an injector timing output based on 2 parameters: RPM and Load (airflow, measured by the AMM). There was some excellent discussion on http://www.scottsglen.com, but Ubupa's pages appear to be offline at this moment.
