Having driven an 82 8V 900 T and an 87 16V 900 S, I was surprised to find that the 87 had more to offer in terms of overall performance. If performance upgrade is desired, installing a high flow exhaust system, plus perhaps porting and polishing the head would do wonders for that S engine. Overall, the engine swap you are considering might be more trouble that it's worth in terms of spent time and effort. That new transmission on a 102K engine is way more appealing than an older turbo engine with more miles.
