there's a pad above the chain on the valve cover that gets hard with age - a new one is cheap at any of the site sponsors. Alternatively you could try a heavier weight synthetic oil - this has been known to satasfactorally quiet valve rattle.
Timing chain breakage is not something you should worry about. Read about the tensioner, pull the inner nut (the 12mm one - not the 27mm one) and measure the extension (and thus stretch) in the tensioner - if its greater than 12mm then you have cause to worry.
