I'll buy that. You make a compelling argument that the large line vents *to* the turbo inlet duct, rather than the other way around. It also explains why both lines go to the same place on the valve cover, unlike other (non-turbocharged) cars that have two lines to two different places. My apologies for any confusion.

I still maintain that the flow direction of the smaller line is also away from the valve cover (venting the crankcase into the intake manifold).

I had a look in Bentley, and on page 110-12 there's a figure that seems to support both of these positions, assuming that the arrows indicate flow directions (which isn't stated in the text).

The Townsend site also corroborates the PCV check valve orientation (link).

Seems to me that NA cars just have the large line going from the valve cover to the manifold, and the small port on the valve cover nipple is capped. They couldn't use this same setup on turbo cars, because of the boost pressurization problem. Instead, they routed the large PCV line to the turbo inlet (where there's no positive pressure), but the vacuum in the turbo inlet is small (relative to the manifold), and even the venturi effect won't draw much at idle when the flow rate is low. So the solution is to add the small line straight to the manifold, with the check valve to prevent boost pressurization.
