The large fuel filter is supposed to be replaced regularly. If you haven't done so lately, you should begin by getting a replacement (usually around $15) complete with new sealing washers, and replace it. After that, now that you know a clogged FF isn't restricting fuel flow, go to work on the source of your odor. Remove the floor in the trunk or hatch area. See the two Torx screws holding down the plywood? That's all it takes. Pull out the floor, remove the covers over the fuel gauge level sender (the smaller of the two) and the main fuel pump assembly. Check the slotted rings that hold them in place to be sure they're not loose. Have a friend switch on the ignition (you do not have to start the car unless you want to and you are in a ventilated area) and check for seepage on the fuel fittings to the pump assembly. One line going into the pump assembly is a fuel return line; be sure it is sealed up. If all is well, move into the engine compartment and check for brittle rubber on the main fuel line (it attaches to the injector rail) and the ninety-degree line between the rail and the fuel pressure regulator.
The problem with fuel leaks is that the fuel will vaporize before moisture shows up.
I'm guessing one or both of the (very cheap) rubber seals on the sealing rings beneath your trunk floor are starting to leak. Either way, you'll be doing your car a favor by changing its fuel filter every 30,000 miles.
